who would win?

    1. This cable wouldn’t send any data if it weren’t for a router that supports Gigabit Ethernet

Edit for clarification: No I don’t mean a modem. It’s not 90s anymore. Most modems have a built in router because – realistically – noone buys Internet to connect only one PC through a cable. And some ISP requires that you connect their router-modem combo to WAN, so you can’t even skip routers in 2026 in some scenarios.

Edit 2: Jeez guys. Let’s settle this. It IS technically possible to bypass the router and use pure modem. This is very uncommon tho and I do not consider it a valid home network.

Also… You cannot bypass the router when you have fiber optic, because your ONT requires an ISP provided router to connect to the network. You can’t just take the fiber optic, slap a modulator to Ethernet and connect to the Internet. Thus my point stands. You need a router for that cable to do anything.

    3. Throughput or latency/stability

It’s not that uncommon for modern wireless to be faster than Gigabit Ethernet, which a lot of devices still have gigabit Ethernet and will have you know Wi-Fi 6, 6e or even Wi-Fi 7.

Cable is better…. But getting the cable to the correct room isn’t always possible, at least not in my house.

Easy; $500 million laser communication satellite

I trust a cable more then a wireless thingy where nobody really knows where what is going (and who might also have access).

      Paranoia is fun …

(and cable is always more reliable and efficient)

    7. When the 500$ router needs the 5$ Ethernet to be used in some setups from the modem to the router itself.

The wifi router, since the cable isn’t an ethernet router. Without which a couple tin cans and string would win.

    9. I have one internet cable going through the entire house just so i can have internet 🤣 problem is it unplugs really quickly so when I don’t have wifi i have to dive under my desk to fix it atleast twice a week lol

Until you realize these days if you have wifi 6/7, the speed, ping, and reliability are essentially the same.
